Western Thermal, leading specialist engineers in thermal & acoustic insulation, ventilation ductwork, trace heating, and fire stopping, with over thirty years’ experience, has acquired the business and assets of Henderson Site Services (“HSS”), the full engineering company that fabricates, installs and modulates all types of pipework systems, vessels and structures. This is a major, strategic and earnings enhancing acquisition for the Company, as it adds a further highly complementary skillset to Western Thermal’s already broad construction offering and also to the other industries it serves including pharmaceuticals, food processing, petrochemicals healthcare, leisure, and infrastructure.
The acquisition is in line with Western Thermal’s company goals and growth strategy in a number of ways. HSS is similar to Western Thermal in that it global in its outlook, operating in Continental Europe, Africa and China. Similarly, it is a multi-disciplined engineering company through its service lines of Pipework & Modularisation, Structural & Architectural, and Cryogenic Insulation, and operates across multiple and complementary sectors.
HSS was originally formed as PSL in 1988 prior to a merger in 2009 with the site engineering division of Henderson Process Systems Ltd. HSS is headquartered in Blaydon on Tyne, Newcastle, and has a total of over 100 skilled employees. This base dovetails with Western Thermal’s regional office hubs in Milford Haven, Leeds, Stroud, Chorley and London.
After going through rigorous approval processes, HSS has gained preferred supplier status for companies such as Nestle, Proctor & Gamble, Star Refrigeration, GlaxoSmithKline and Tetrapak. HSS has a permanent site presence for key clients at Barnard Castle for GlaxoSmithKline, Morpeth for Piramal Healthcare and Peterlee for Hexion Specialty Chemicals.
HSS has completed projects for many of Western Thermal’s own client base including Arla Foods’ where HSS was contracted to install stainless steel platforms, along with the full process pipework system, service pipework and other hygienic pipework systems. HSS’ work includes an 11 month long project employing over 91 engineers at Diageo Leven’s bottling plant where HSS provided process and service pipework, and the fabrication and
installation of structural steelwork.
Western Thermal’s landmark projects include Heathrow Terminal 5, Arla Foods’ Aylesbury dairy, One Hyde Park, Wembley Stadium, and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
HSS has a full suite of internationally approved procedures, which include MIG, TIG and MMA that allows it to manufacture items out of a vast array of metals such as Stainless Steel, Duplex, Cunifer, Aluminum, and Carbon steel. HSS is also an approved contractor for the installation of Techlite, which is used for clean room insulation.
Trevor Horsley, founder of Western Thermal, said: “The HSS acquisition adds to Western Thermal’s already fast-growing business and, being entirely complementary in its skillset, represents a great step forward in terms of deliverability to the major industry players.” Joe Henderson, who has been at the helm of Henderson Site Services since inception, said: “The unified power of Western Thermal plus HSS is a great example of where a combination is greater than the sum of the parts with the enlarged company able to offer pipework, thermal insulation, ducting and fire-stop engineering solutions for any project.”
Mr S.M. Lodha, Chairman of Western Thermal, said: “Western Thermal’s organic growth, as witnessed by its ever-increasing tally of high profile, prestigious and complex projects, is now augmented by all of the synergies and opportunities brought by HSS, and the future is very exciting.
“We welcome the HSS Team to our firm and look forward to integrating both businesses and enjoying all the benefits that this merger brings.”
