Western Thermal teams up with the Grenfell Community – DIY SOS on BBC One

Western Thermal Limited is proud to announce its association with the DIY SOS team and the Grenfell community, through its work with Designer Group. Designer Group and Western Thermal have been responsible for the insulation to pipework services, and the work has been featured in a two part documentary special for the BBC TV’s DIY SOS airing on Wednesday 5 and 12 September at 9pm.

In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team attempt their biggest project yet – constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community on a 750-square-metre site.

In the first episode, the team are building a new home for the Dale Youth Boxing Club, with the aid of large construction companies, generous suppliers, volunteers and the Duke of Cambridge, who visits the site. The boxing club takes on anyone who wants to train and has been helping youngsters in the area for over 50 years, starting the careers of world-renowned stars such as James de Gale and George Groves.

The club had been housed in Grenfell Tower since 1999, but a few months before the tragic fire it moved into a newly refurbished space. Since the fire, the club has been temporarily using a gym in a disused car park, as trainer Mick Delaney is determined to carry on for the young people who use the club.

This build was months of planning and was scheduled to take nine weeks to build. It provided many firsts for Nick and the team – the challenge of building under a motorway and using steel construction as well as becoming its longest and largest build.

The second episode sees the team attempt to build a two-storey flexible-use centre that can be used by the community however it decides. The team are joined by the Duke of Cambridge, who meets local residents and talks to fire-fighters who were among the first responders on the night of the tragic fire. Along the way, Nick meets different groups who could benefit from the building of a new community space.

Speaking about Western Thermal’s participation in the build, Trevor Horsley, CEO of Western Thermal Limited said, “We’re delighted at Western Thermal to have worked with the Designer Group on the Grenfell Community space project, and to have played a part in the on-going rehabilitation of the community. We hope that all members of the community will be well serviced by space.”
The Grenfell Tower disaster moved people across the country and thanks to the incredible generosity of building and engineering companies, suppliers and volunteers, there will be a new community space in the area.
